The Café-Bar Moral is, according to the Burgalesa, an institution of sorts. Opening early, she says it has often been the final port of call after a long night out partying in the city centre.
It is clean and well lit, and the staff have been consistently friendly on my now several visits, reminding me of a comfortable greasy-spoon back home. What Moral has that the Tuck Inn does not, though, is the Tigre Reforzado, a deep-fried, super-sized snack for the hungry penny-pincher.
For €2.50 the Tigre Reforzado consists of a Tigre, four rings of fried, battered Calamar and a caña (small glass) of Amstel. Often, you will be offered a pincho or tapa as well – on my most recent visit, more Calamar, cooked with a tasty curry-ish sauce. This is good eating.
The Tigre itself is a very well-constructed, freshly fried in the kitchen. It’s golden, without any overly dark or burnt areas, and crispy when poking holes in it for the accompanying sherry. It has a strong, but not too intense flavour, and the béchamel is distinct from the mussel meat, which is fairly roughly chopped and gives the impression of having been done by hand rather than in a blender. Sherry is available from a glass bottle.
